Description

First published in 1827, this compelling novel paints a vivid portrait of life in Glasgow and, most especially, life in the old Glasgow University, just before the Industrial Revolution. Both warmly sympathetic and gently satirical, the novel also emphasizes the confusion and futility of war.
Thomas Hamilton served as an officer in an infantry regiment during the Peninsular War. Upon retiring from the army in 1818, he quickly established himself as one of the leading writers for Blackwood’s Magazine, and was an acquaintance of both Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth. Maurice Lindsay is a poet, broadcaster, and scholar.
