Description
Protozoan parasites such as Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis are recognized etiologic agents of waterborne disease outbreaks. A common factor with these microorganisms is the lack of simple and rapid methods for their detection and identification in water. Because current methods for detection of microorganisms in water are based on lengthy conventional culturing or microscopic enumeration techniques, this project developed a simple and rapid screening assay for selected microbial pathogens by adapting molecular methods for use in a convenient 96-well microplate format. which offers high throughput, rapid reading and potential for automation at low cost.
