Description
Commemorating the more than 25,000 Jews and Gypsies that were deported from Belgium to Auschwitz, this collection is a stunning depiction of wartime Europe. Completed with valuable photographic material obtained through relatives of the victims, this impressive and moving compendium consists of four trilingual books in Dutch, French, and English. The first book describes the context and background from which these photographs originate, while the second and third books display all archival materials. The fourth and final entry elaborates on the numerous individual stories these pictures relate, deepened by official records and personal testimonials. With more than 18,000 portraits and 100 archival illustrations, this is a powerful homage to those who lost their lives during the Holocaust.
Maxime Steinberg is a professor associated with the Institute for Jewish Studies–Brussels and the scientific advisor of the Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance. Other contributors include Ward Adriaens, Laurence Schram, Patricia Ramet, Eric Hautermann, and Ilse Marquenie.
