Making History

Description

A thought-provoking reflection on Black art within the Canadian cultural landscape. Featuring boundary-breaking artists and scholars, Making History collects poems, artist statements, and portfolios that showcase thoughtful understandings of Black aesthetics, Black contemporary art’s institutional presence, and perspectives on modern and historical art practices throughout Canada.

Making History explores new approaches to the relationship between institutions, artists, and audiences while emphasizing collaboration, resisting exclusionary curatorial practices, and allowing multiple perspectives to bring about transformative change.

Julie Crooks is the head of the Department of Arts, Global Africa, and the Diaspora at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Dominique Fontaine is a curator and founding director of aposteriori, a non-profit curatorial platform. Silvia Forni is a senior curator, Global Africa, at the Royal Ontario Museum and associate professor of anthropology at the University of Toronto.
