Where relevant, when students assess themselves in an end-of-chapter lab or a chapter exercise, the authors guide them to their appropriate starting level in the Activate, Motivate, and Advance Programs on yoga, running, flexibility, and meditation. About the book
Activate learning with real-world fitness and wellness topics
- The most modern strength training presentation available includes photos and videos of over 80 strength-training and flexibility exercises featuring actual college students, modern gym equipment, and options for students with limited access to equipment. Exercises are organized by muscles worked so that students can make apples-to-apples comparisons and determine which version of an exercise is the most appropriate for their individual needs. Exercises are also accompanied by orientation diagrams, so that students have a clear idea of which muscles they are working.
- Diversity boxes address topics relevant to diverse student populations, acknowledging that age, race, gender, disability, and individual life circumstances can result in specific fitness and wellness needs.
- Encourage Behavior Change
- A strong emphasis is placed on behavior change throughout the text:
- Try It! sections within most feature boxes provide suggestions for immediate action;
- Tools for Change boxes provide tools for longer-term change; and
- Plan for Change labs ask students to write out an action plan for behavior change.
- Apply It!/Try It! Timeline Tips offer coaching suggestions for behavior change. The timelines give students sample goals to integrate into their lives step-by-step.
- NEW! Putting It All Together: Your Total Fitness Program builds on the fitness principles students learn in Chapters 1 through 5. Students can select their program, track their progress, and access related tips on their mobile phone.
- Unique Case Studies presented in each chapter introduce a character who reflects the concerns, questions, and thought processes that students are likely to have themselves. Apply It! and Try It! sections at the end of the case studies encourage critical thinking and help students take action to apply healthy behavior changes to their own lives.
- More than 80 videos of strength-training and flexibility exercises are available. Students can access additional instruction on their own time and have the ability to exercise from the comfort of their home.

The labs not only measure a student’s current level of fitness and wellness, but also teach practical lifelong skills and encourage real behavior change.
